On Sunday, August 27th, at 5 pm, one of our storytellers will be Lulu Miller of the radio show/podcast Invisibilia. We'll be meeting at 925 W Diversey, at Holy Covenant United Methodist. Parking is tough but it couldn't be closer to the Brown Line. Also note: there is no AC. We'll have cold drinks and fans going but you should dress accordingly.
(Think of Gilead as your church home? Consider bringing a six-pack or a plate of homemade cookies to share. We'll have some too, of course.)
For those who aren't (yet!) fans, Invisibilia (Latin for invisible things) is about the invisible forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu, Hanna Rosin, and Alix Spiegel, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling with scientific research that aims to make you see your own life differently.
This past season, Lulu has been on sabbatical, writing a book about the line between taxonomy and madness, like you do. She's a HUGE believer in stories that make meaning and save lives — from a secular point of view. She's super excited to come do her thing at Gilead, and to experience what we're doing.
YOU are welcome, even if the only reason you'd set FOOT in a church service is to hear Lulu Miller. We are always church with all kinds of people — queer, straight, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and cis folks — with all kinds of (dis)belief, baggage, questions, hopes... We always strive to be a place where people feel safe and welcome and if you can believe the reports, we often manage to do that. So, like we said: you're totally welcome to come. We hope you do.
